History of our Flickinger

A bit of history on Flickinger consoles

« Daniel Flickinger was running a small company building custom recording consoles in the late 60’s and early 70’s in Hudson, Ohio. His client list was impressive: Ike Turner, Sly Stone, Muscle Shoals, United Sound Systems (George Clinton’s favourite studio), Paragon Studios and others.

As far as I know, he didn’t build more than 22 recording desks. He and his team were well ahead of their time and came up with the first sweepable EQ and in-line console design. The build quality was amazing due to the use of mil spec’d components and the era’s high standards.

Our Flickinger N24 came out of the basement of Chicago Recording Company (CRC), where it had been stored since the 70’s. Putting it back in service wasn’t easy being as there were no schematics or documentation available. It was CRC’s maintenance tech, Cleon Wells, who helped me with the first steps towards understanding the Flick’s electronics design, signal flow and layout.

The console works and sounds amazing, it really is the centerpiece of our studio. » – Peter
